Case Study: AM:PM Project Management

Specification and installation of Mobile Computing facilities


am:pm offers a bespoke service for ‘Exhibition & Event Management’ and
‘Post-Sale Exhibitor Management’.


TopGPS worked with am:pm during 2003 and early 2004 to review the use of IT and communications equipment within the business. The main aims of the review were:

  • To assess the advantages to be gained by introducing a hand-held computer (Pocket PC) and to choose an appropriate device.
  • To review the alternatives for satellite navigation for use with the Pocket PC whilst on the road.
  • To review the levels of Information Security particularly in the area of data backup.
The expected benefits:
  • An increase in capability of the company to operate away from the office.
  • To raise the profile and profitability of the company by the good use of mobile computing.
  • To reduce risks to the business.
A careful assessment of the business need was made along with a review of the existing equipment in the office. Based on this and on discussions with the Principal Consultant about the projected growth of the business a recommendation was made to buy a leading edge Pocket PC and an award-winning satellite navigation system. The findings and choices made were documented in a report.

The Pocket PC used Bluetooth networking to link to the Consultant's mobile phone which then made a data connection to the Internet. This connection can be used to browse for information and to download emails. The equipment and software was fully installed at the am:pm office and then completely tested.
